Programme Objectives


The objectives of the International Buoy Programme for the Indian Ocean are to establish and maintain a network of platforms in the Indian Ocean to provide Meteorological and Oceanographic data for both real-time operational requirements and research purposes, including support to the World Weather Watch Programme (WWW), the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), to tropical cyclone forecasting and monitoring, as well as to the research activities of participating institutions.

The programme is build upon co-operation among those agencies and institutions with Indian Ocean interests. The programme is also liaise directly with data users so as to monitor the effectiveness of the programme in meeting user requirements.
